My Entreprenuership Story

Exposure to Entrepreneurship

A time that I was exposed to entrepreneurship was back in 2014 when my cousin and I wanted to develop our own bartering website. Growing up my cousin and I would always trade toys, shoes, and basically everything we owned. One day we were sitting on the couch and I had a breakthrough. My vision was that people could use a global platform to trade items through the internet. Soon after getting this idea I told my cousin and we took action. We first made a blue print of our idea and met with a web developer to see how much it would cost to develop this platform. In the process we came across many roadblocks, some of which we were able to fix and some that were a brick wall. The biggest barrier that we faced was security, more specifically product security. We needed to figure out a way to ensure that clients trade what they say they are going to trade. With that being said, this idea was eventually a bust but I learned a lot of valuable lessons that make me a better business man today.

The reason I am taking this class is because I enjoy acting on ideas. When I have an idea, I am not the type of person to sit on it and let it float away. I also find a lot of pleasure in solving problems and most importantly, making other peoples lives better. With that being said, I feel like this class will help me open my mind to different ideas as well as teach me lessons from my other class mates.

  1. Matthew,

I really like the idea you and your cousin had for a bartering website. Similar to when you guys would trade toys and clothes growing up, I used to do the same with my cousins as well as some close friends. Although your idea became a bust, you've already showcased your entrepreneurial capabilities and I think you will do great in this class.

  2. Hi Matthew,

I really enjoyed your post and its cool that you were able to pursue that idea at a young age. Bartering has always been a growing form of transactions and it is cool that you were trying to enter that market. Figuring out a solution to the security problem sounded expensive and something that would be hard to do without spending too much money. I think it is cool that you are taking this class to learn and discuss new ideas with classmates. There are many creative minds signed up for ENT and I also believe this is going to be a great form for creativity.

  3. Hi Matthew,

I can really relate to the idea you and your cousin had. I too was very interested in starting a small scale business by slowly getting into the shoe resale industry with my good friend but there were far too many barriers we faced very similar to yours that forced us to not even launch it. I enjoyed reading about your entrepreneurship story and you included a lot of good details in your explanation. Being able to deal with any type of problem in a real world situation is a very important trait to have. Great overall post.
